竹村洋典医師は、防衛医科大学校卒業後、研修医時代から総合臨床医学の研修を始め、米国・テネシー大では、3年間の家庭医療レジデントとなり米国家庭医療専門医及び米国家庭医学会フェローを取得するなど、総合医療の本場アメリカに渡り腕を磨いた。その後、当時医師数が少なかった三重県に移り、診療科にこだわらずに何でも診られ、かつさまざまな職種の医療従事者と連携のできる総合診療医を育て、自らも実践。同県の人口当たりの総合診療医の数を全国3位にまでアップさせた。
2018年に開催された日本プライマリ・ケア連合学会学術大会の大会長、国の第三者機関である日本専門医機構総合診療医検討委員会の副委員長、日本医師会生涯教育推進委員会委員、また世界のプライマリ・ケア医学をめざす総合診療を束ねる学術団体WONCAのアジア大洋州支部の学術誌Asia Pacific Family Medicine誌の編集長などを務める。東京都の大学研究者による事業提案制度において、「世界トップレベルの地域医療を東京に構築する事業」において採択されている(事業費1億3千万円)。医学博士。
竹村医師は、日本の医療が最も苦手としてきた「何でも診られる医療」「連携の取られる医療」「患者中心の医療」の重要性を説き、ジェネラリストの養成に取り組む。
