下村裕医師の専門分野は分子遺伝学と毛髪科学。母校である新潟大学では、毛髪について専門研究を30年以上続ける。遺伝子疾患でも、毛髪になにかしら症状が出る疾患が数多くあり、下村医師は遺伝性毛髪疾患を主な研究テーマに、100種類以上ある遺伝性毛髪疾患の発症メカニズムを解明するために、さまざまな遺伝性毛髪疾患の家系を対象に大規模な遺伝子解析を行い、疾患原因遺伝子の特定と機能の解析をテーマに日夜、研究・治療を重ねた。
2017年1月より山口大学大学院医学系研究科皮膚科学講座教授に就任。常に多くの患者の治療に携わり、手術も行っている為、主に研究活動は夜中になることもあると言う。また、医師の育成も携わっている。
